J.D.三年生 Mの同級生たち

　ご無沙汰しております。J.D.プログラム3年生（３L：スリーエル）のMです。今回は、私の友人を二人、韓国からの留学生S君と、地元テネシー州出身のアメリカ人J君をご紹介したいと思います。二人とも、同じ３Lの仲間です。

　まず、韓国からの留学生であるS君をご紹介します。S君は、ロースクールに来る前は韓国で独占禁止法を専門とする実務家として働いていました。大変生真面目な性格で、クラスでは必ず最前列の席に座ってノートをとっています。また、いつも図書館が閉まるくらいまで黙々と勉強しています。そんなS君から、留学を考えていらっしゃる日本の皆さんに向けてのメッセージを頂きました。

Hello, welcome to the prestigious law school in the US. I believe I made a very good decision in light of my experience here at Vandy. First of all, it provides me with exactly what I need in my professional path. I came from Korea, where I worked for the antitrust agency. This law school has impressive array of class offerings especially in the field of business and economics. For example, it offers not only the antitrust law but also antitrust economics. Second, Nashville is a good place in which to relax your tired body and soul. No waves of crowd. No annoying noise. No suffocating smog. But you can still find lots of fun. Third, I could feel as if I were in my hometown. There are four distinct seasons, lots of mountains and lakes, delicious peaches and grapes, and good people. I could get invaluable help from many people, especially from Asian students who share similar experiences in the harsh environment of law school. I believe that my experience will not be much different from what you can have here. I love Vandy and sincerely invite you!

　さて、もう一人は、地元テネシー州ノクスビル（学校のあるナッシュビルから車で２・３時間）出身のJ君です。J君は、J.D./MBAという4年間のジョイントプログラムに所属しています。１Lのときにセクション（クラス）が一緒だったのと、比較的年齢が近い（J.D.入学者の平均年齢は23～24歳なのです！）ことで仲良くなりました。一緒に勉強・ゴルフ・テニスなどをすることもあります。J君はロースクールに来る前は、IBMでManagement/ITコンサルタントをしていました。卒業後は、ナッシュビルの弁護士事務所に就職が決まっています。

　ナッシュビルや学校について、以下のようなインタビューをしてみました。

Q：　ナッシュビルのよいところは？
A：　 Social benefits: Great climate and great scenic beauty, both of which make golfing wonderful. Great golf courses; great night-life; great cultural opportunities—museums, concert halls, art galleries, etc…; great sporting events (football (of the U.S. persuasion), baseball, and hockey). Career benefits: Robust business culture; fast-growth city: growing population and growing corporate relocations to Nashville. State capital is located here (which gives you access to the state government and indirectly drives a great deal of the legal practice in the city). Moreover, the legal market in Nashville is very strong—high quality attorneys and ample work.

Q：　逆にナッシュビルの悪いところは？
A： Social drawbacks: All the activities might detract from your schooling. Career drawbacks: There are no big name law firms and limited international work. However, there are large multinational companies, for instance, Nissan, HCA, and Caterpiller. Additionally, though I have no personal insight into this, all the big-name, big-city, international law firms hire students out of Vanderbilt Law.

Q：　余暇はどう過ごしてる？
A： Working on my house　（彼はまだ20代だというのに、ナッシュビル近郊に豪邸を購入しました）; playing golf and tennis; exercising; hiking; watching football and other sporting events (usually with a cold beer).

Q：　なぜバンダービルトを選んだの？
A：　1) Great school with a great reputation. The students are highly desired by the legal community. 2) It offered the JD/MBA program I desired. 3) More importantly, my wife was also admitted to Vandy Law.
J君の奥さんは、一足先に卒業して、ナッシュビルの弁護士事務所で働いています。

Q：　好きなクラスは？
A：　Constitutional Law II. Though I will never practice Con. law, the subject matter was highly interesting and the professor was fantastic. He will scare you and enlighten you every class.

Q：　日本にいったことは？日本食を食べたことはある？
A：　I’ve never been to Japan, but I absolutely will in the future. 　My favorite Japanese food is a rice ball. 　

Q：　最後に、日本の受験生の皆さんに一言お願いします。
A：　The business school is next door—literally fifty yards from the law school—and there are a large number of Japanese students to network with and build community with.

LL.M.の同級生たち

　当校のLL.M.プログラムは小規模ですが、様々な国からバラエティに富んだ人たちが集まってきています。今年のLL.M.には、８カ国、１８名の学生が所属しています。そんな中から、5人の同級生を紹介したいと思います。

　一人目に紹介するブルガリア出身のMさんは、英語だけでなく、ドイツ語とロシア語も話すことができるそうです。教養豊かで心優しい彼女は、みんなから好かれています。近くに住んでいる私Kは、彼女を含む数名の友人と、しばしば買い物や食事を楽しんでいます。

１．あなた自身について
Q: 出身地はどちらですか？
A: Bulgaria, Sofia　

Q: 自国ではどんなお仕事をされていますか？
A:　Arsov Natchev Ganeva, Attorneys and Counsellors at Law

Q: LL.M.卒業後の予定を教えてください。
A: I would like to work as an attorney at a law firm.

２．ナッシュビルについて
Q: 出身地と比べてどんな印象をお持ちですか？
A: Nashville is smaller and quieter than Sofia. 　

Q: 長所と短所を教えてください。
A: The nature and the climate are very nice. Nashville is quiet and relaxing. There a lot of nice shops and parks. Most people are very friendly and helpful.
Sometimes during the weekends there are almost no people on the streets. The public transportation is not good. 　

Q: 自由時間には何をしていますか？
A: I don’t have much free time. I go out with friends or just go for a walk by myself.　

Q: お気に入りの場所を教えてください。
A:　I like the campus a lot. I like the cafes and the restaurants closest to the campus (on 21st Avenue).

３．勉学について
Q: バンダービルトを選んだ理由は何ですか？
A: I like the fact that there are only a small number of LL.M. students and we get a lot of attention from the professors. Our program is fully integrated into the J.D. program and we may choose all our classes according to our interests. 　

Q: とくにお気に入りの授業は何ですか？
A:　I like all my classes. I don’t have a favorite class.

４．日本について
Q: 日本を訪れたことはありますか？
A:　No, but I have always dreamed of visiting Japan.

Q: 日本というと何を連想しますか？
A:　Kimono, ikebana, computers, modern cars, sake. Beautiful nature and cherry blossoms. Impressive pagodas. Japanese gardens.

Q: 和食を試したことはありますか？
A: Yes, I like everything that I tried, but I do not know the names. 　

Q: バンダービルトへの留学を考えている方々に一言お願いします。
A:　I recommend Vanderbilt a lot. I think Japanese students are very intelligent and diligent and will be very successful in their law studies, so I would encourage them to come. There are a lot of Japanese students at Vanderbilt, so the new students will not feel lonely.

　二人目のJ.M.さんは、韓国からの留学生です。気さくな性格の持ち主で、彼の周りには自然と日本人留学生が集まります。彼は、いつも夜遅くまで図書館で勉強している勤勉家でもありますが、先日図書館で会った際には、「勉強が終わったら走りに行かない？」とジョギングに誘ってくれました。あれこれ話しながら走り終えると、勉強の疲れも吹き飛んでいました。

１．あなた自身について
Q: 出身地はどちらですか。
A:　The Republic of Korea. Mokpo and Kwang-Ju are mainly my hometown. I have lived in Seoul for more than 10 years.

Q: 自国ではどんな仕事をしていますか？
A:　I worked at SK Corporation for 2 years. Before that, I worked at WORLD ECONOMIC LAW RESEARCH CENTER at Korea University for 6- months. And before that, I was an English instructor and manager of a private language institute with part-time jobs as a translator and an interpreter for 2 years.

Q: LL.M.卒業後の予定を教えてください。
A:　I want to study further in a JD program. My interest field is M&A and financial stuffs like project financings, debt-issuing, IPO.

２．ナッシュビルについて
Q: 出身地と比べてどんな印象をお持ちですか？
A:　Compared with Mokpo, it seems like similar, but compared with Seoul it is very different. Nashville is rural, peaceful, slow. I like it up to now.

Q: 長所と短所を教えてください。
A:　As I mentioned above, good aspects of Nashville are slow and peaceful culture, while sometimes it lacks some entertainments with only American football games and country music.

Q: 自由時間には何をしていますか？
A:　As a LLM student, I enjoyed parties with other LLM students or other friends. ISSS office provides good programs for international students to make American friends and improve English.

Q: お気に入りの場所を教えてください。
A:　I like Korean and Japanese restaurants. Also I enjoy Mexican and Indian foods.

３．勉学について
Q: バンダービルトを選んだ理由は何ですか？
A:　It’s a great school and my ex-general council got JD from Vandy. I heard from him and other US attorneys, who were my colleagues, it had good reputation in US. More importantly, it has a good law and business program which I preferred to other big schools like Georgetown. And also it has the smallest LLM class in U.S compared with Georgetown, NYU, and Columbia. Lastly, Vandy’s LLM program is totally integrated in the JD program.

Q: とくに気に入っている授業とその理由を教えてください。
A:　Professor Thompson’s Corporation class is my favorite class because he is a great scholar and one of the important professor in building the Law and Business program. Many JD students like his class, too.

４．日本について
Q: 日本を訪問したことはありますか。
A:　No. If, however I have time in the future, I want to visit Japan.

Q: 日本というと何を連想しますか？
A:　Big economy and some big companies like Sony, Nomura, Toyota. And also Japanese animations.

Q: 和食を試したことはありますか？お気に入りは何でしょう？
A:　Yes. In Korea, I usually went to Japanese restaurants. I like Sushi, Sake, etc.

Q: バンダービルトへの留学を考えている方々に一言お願いします。
A:　It’s a good school. Cynthia who is now an assistant admissions officer takes care of you and she is very nice. Professors are very professional and curriculum is very intense but interesting.

　　三人目は、ポーランド出身の弁護士、Kさんです。彼女は、母国語であるポーランド語のほか、英語、ドイツ語も堪能なスーパーガールです。卒業後は、NYで１年間のインターンをした後、国に戻る予定とのことです。

Q　ナッシュビルのいいところ・悪いところは？
+ really nice people, good weather
- country music, no means of public transportation

Q　一番好きな授業は？
Corporation. I am into this subject.
彼女はCorporationの授業ではいつもJDの学生に混じって積極的に発言をしています。日本人にはなかなか真似できないことですね。

Ｑ　日本と聞くと、何を思い出す？
Sushi, geisha, Hiroshima.
And I love the whole Japanese cuisine- sashimi and sushi are my favorites!

　四人目は、インド人留学生Sさんです。授業中に積極的に発言する彼の姿勢には、見習うべきものがあります。また、料理上手な彼は、よく自宅でパーティーを開き、私たちを招いてくれます。毎晩のように夕食を共にする私Kにとっては、家族のような存在です。

1. あなた自身について
Q: 出身地はどちらですか？
A: Allahabad, India (It’s the most important Centre for Hindu Religion, Has the biggest High Court in the world !!!)

Q: 自国ではどんな仕事をしていますか？
A: I'm an Additional Government Advocate, State of Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad High Court, India, currently on study leave - My jobs involves Criminal Prosecution at the High Court.

Q: LL.M卒業後のプランを教えてください。
A: Return back to my Country and try for Judgeship !!!

2. ナッシュビルについて
Q: どんな印象を持っていますか？
A: Nice town, friendly people- Good environment for students

Q: 気に入っている点とそうでない点を教えてください。
A: Like the music scene here, public transport is awful :(

Q: 自由時間はどうすごしていますか？
A: Interacting with the people here, Astrology is a hobby and I like to look into the birth charts of friends, music, weekends we go out a lot.

Q: お気に入りの場所を教えてください。
A: Target, Kroger, Sitar (Indian Restaurant)

3. 勉学について
Q: バンダービルトを選んだ理由は何でしょう？
A: Great place to study!!

Q: とくに気に入っている授業は何ですか？それはなぜですか？
A: Criminal Constitution Law- Prof. Hall is very good. I’m writing a thesis on Clinical Legal Education and I love sharing insights with Prof. Bloch (My Primary Advisor)

4. 日本について
Q: 日本を訪れたことはありますか？
A: No, but would love to!!! More so now because of my dear friend K!

Q: 日本というと何を連想しますか？
A: Sony/Honda and the little umbrellas:) !!!

Q: 和食を試したことはありますか？お気に入りは何でしょう？
A: Yes- Sushi

Q: バンダービルトへの留学を考えている方々に一言お願いします。
A: You already have the best in the world at your disposal, if you get the opportunity to live and experience this place it could give you a totally new perspective which I believe would help you in becoming a world citizen !!

　五人目は、ドイツ出身のCさんです。彼女は、母国でLawの学位をとってすぐにアメリカにやってきました。LLM卒業後は、アメリカのローファームでインターンをしたあと、ドイツに戻る予定とのことです。

Q: どうしてバンダービルドを選んだの？
A:　Very good university and offering interesting LLM classes.

Q: 一番好きなクラスと理由を教えてください。
A:　Criminal Constitutional Law and International Criminal Law, because I love criminal law :)
　Hall先生の教えるCriminal Constitutional Lawは、LLM生のなかで最も評判のよい授業のひとつです。Ｈａｌｌ先生は今年で引退なさるとのこと、残念ながら来年度の授業はありません。

Q: 休日は何をしている？
A:　Going shopping, going to the movies, seeing friends, having dinner, being in bars and clubs, visiting interesting places

Q: ナッシュビルでお気に入りの場所は？
A:　Mall at Green Hills, Layla (club), The Shellfish (pub), Irish Pub (club/ bar), Amerigo (restaurant), STARBUCKS!!
　どうやら彼女は、オンだけでなくオフも、かなり楽しんでいる模様。そういえば以前、「アメリカの何がいいって・・・タバコが安いのよ！思いっきり吸えてうれしいわ！！」と言っていましたっけ。（ドイツはタバコが高く、アメリカの約２倍の値段だそうです。）

Q　日本というと何を想像する？
A:　Big and rich country, Tokio, shushi :)
TokioではなくてTokyo、ShushiではなくSushiですが・・・（笑）
