番外編その１ MBA2年生Kの場合

Law Schoolのお隣、Vanderbilt大学のビジネススクールであるOwen Graduate School of Management （以下Owen）のMBAプログラム２年次在学中のKと申します。

今回Owen在学中の私が伝統あるバンダービルトロースクール日本人会より原稿執筆を依頼されたのは、Law SchoolとOwenとの合同授業を履修しているからに他なりません。私の体験談を通してLaw SchoolあるいはVanderbiltで学ぶ魅力を皆様にお伝え出来れば幸いです。

１．オープンなカリキュラム
Law SchoolとOwenの合同授業は相当数に及びます。代表的な授業としては、Corporate Finance, Corporate Restructuring under Chapter 11, M&A, Equity Markets, Real Estate Financeといったところでしょうか。全てのOwenで履修出来る科目は全Vandy学生に対してオープンになっていますが、卒業単位として認定され得るか否かは講義担当教授と在籍schoolのacademic programとの交渉によるのが通常です。この点、Law SchoolとOwenの合同授業は既に公式に単位認定科目に指定されています。承知する限り、Law School学生に人気があるOwenの講義はFinanceとAccounting科目のようです。実際、幾つかの両スクールの合同授業はFinanceあるいはAccounting科目がpre-requisiteになっています。

２．授業の一例：M&A
現在私が履修しているのがLaw schoolとOwenの合同授業であるM&Aのクラスです。この科目はOwenではFinance creditに充当されます。授業の構成は、前半３ヶ月がM&AにおけるFinance分野中心、後半３ヶ月がLaw分野中心になっています。講義は常時Law schoolとOwenそれぞれから一人ずつ、計２人の教授によって進められます。このOwenとの合同授業であるM&Aと他のLaw School単独授業との大きな違いは、チーム単位で毎週の課題に取り組む点です。Owenではノーマルなスタイルなのですが、毎週教授から課題ケースと問題が与えられ、チーム単位でレポートを提出する必要があります。チームはLaw SchoolとOwenの学生の混合であることがmustで、レポート作成にあたっては、Finance論点はOwen学生が、Law論点にあたってはLaw School学生が貢献していくことが求められます。また任意のケース１回について、各グループは授業中にプレゼンテーションを行うことも義務付けられています。合同授業の醍醐味は、こうしたグループワークを通して、違うフィールドで学ぶ学生がお互いのスキルを補完・向上し合うことにあると私は思っています。

私の稚拙な文章だけではこの授業の魅力を充分に伝えることが出来るか不安だったため、チームメートであるLaw School 在学（JD,3L）のアメリカ人Rさんに、Owenとの合同授業についてのコメントを頂きました。Rさんは間違い無く私がVanderbiltで出会った最も優秀なアメリカ人の一人です。法律分野は言うまでも無くFinanceセンスも抜群で、当初のgive & takeの関係が今ではすっかりあやしいぐらいです。既にRさんと一緒にこなしたケースレポートの回数は１０回を越えており、プレゼンテーションの準備に２人で数時間の議論を交わしたこともあります。お陰で今ではプライベートでも会う程の仲です。前置きが長くなりましたが、以下、Rさんのコメントです。

Benefits of studying with Owen students; In my opinion, law is a part of business (and not the other way around) and as such, it is critical that law students work with business students to learn how to work together to come up with solutions that both allow business to grow and comply with the law. Personally, working with business students has really helped me to understand critical aspects of management that I can use to be a better lawyer.

Benefits of studying law and business; As a former manager at a Fortune 1000 company, I think the most effective lawyers are ones who know how the law works within the context of the business. Specifically, at Vanderbilt I have taken classes in finance and accounting that provide me with a better understanding of how to write contracts that include finance and accounting numbers.

Taking joint classes will be better for my career; For me personally, I am going to go into venture capital. In this area of business, the lawyers have to be as good at law as they are with finance. The only lawyers who can succeed in this area are ones who are very adept with financial models. As such, my finance and accounting classes will be invaluable to me. Additionally, working with the business students really helped me to become much better at finance and accounting. I have learned as much from my finance classes as I have from the Owen students.

I recommend Japanese students take joint classes; I think both Japanese students and American students benefit from having a diverse group to work out problems. When I was a consultant, I often had to work with people from all over the world. And people from different countries or continents bring different perspectives to the problems we are asked to solve. My group had students from both the United States and Asia (Japan and Taiwan). Our group consistently received top grades on our assignments because of our ability to bring different perspectives to a problem. Without the diverse people in our group we would never have gotten such high grades. And plus, it is a lot of fun to work with people from different countries. I know other law students have also said how much they enjoy working with students from other countries.

３．終わりに
ここまで硬いことばかりを書きましたが、Law Schoolの隠れた？魅力は何と言っても「若さ」です。Owenはある程度の職務経験のある学生が集まるため、平均年齢がかなり違うように感じられます。更に、女性学生の多さはOwenの比ではなく、「華やかさ」も大きな魅力です。Law Schoolの校舎で可愛い学生を目撃する度に、その恵まれた学習環境を羨望の眼差しで見る私（妻子あり）がいます。…というのは冗談にせよ、優秀なLaw School学生と一緒に学ぶ機会を得たことは、間違いなく私の留学生活の財産の一つです。スクールの垣根を越えた”opportunity of studying”はここVanderbiltに確実に存在します。
